A fine Swiss 18 carat gold, enamel and pearl set open faced pendant watch, circa 1880. Retailed by the Duhme Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. Highly jeweled nickel lever movement. Gold cuvette. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, outer Arabic minute ring and fine gold hands. Finely painted polychrome enamel scene to the case back after the painting ‘Springtime’ by Pierre-Auguste Cot, the band with champlevé enamel leaf design, both bezels and bow set with pearls. Movement and dial signed.

The finely painted enamel scene on the case of the present watch is after the painting ‘Springtime’ by Pierre-Auguste Cot from 1873. This idyllic Arcadian painting depicts the flirtation between two young lovers and is one of Cot’s most recognized works. It was originally exhibited at the Salon of 1873 in Paris, where it was bought by John Wolfe.
