Glashütte silver watch with 1st Quality designation
–
A rare 1st quality marine observation chronometer Calibre 48, made by GUB Glashütte in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1940-1968. This particular chronometer boasts a rare 1st quality designation, denoting its superior construction and accuracy. The watch is encased in a 900 silver plain open faced case, hallmarked by GUB Glashütte. The silver plated dial of the chronometer showcases a range of features designed to enhance its functionality. Positioned at nine o’clock, a power reserve indicator allows the wearer to gauge the remaining energy within the watch. At three o’clock, a subsidiary seconds dial adds a touch of symmetry to the dial’s layout. The blued steel hands, both aesthetically pleasing and highly legible, further enhance the overall appeal of this exceptional timepiece. Within the heart of this chronometer lies a Glashütte anchor chronometer escapement ensuring remarkable accuracy and precision, a particularly large balance wheel, which contributes to the watch’s stability and reliability and a fine adjustment mechanism further enhances the timekeeping capabilities of this extraordinary timepiece. The movement bears not one, but two hallmarks, displaying its works number.
Both the dial and movement bear the distinctive signature of GUB Glashütte, a mark of quality and authenticity. Additionally, the case and movement share a matching number, further confirming their harmonious union.

GUB Glashütte, also known as Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH, was a watchmaking company based in Glashütte, Germany. The company was founded in 1951 and was one of the five watchmaking companies that formed the Glashütte Original brand in 1994. It was a state owned enterprise that existed from 1951 to 1994. During its operation, GUB Glashütte produced various types of watches, including:
Mechanical Watches: GUB Glashütte was known for its high-quality mechanical watches. They produced both manual winding and automatic watches. These watches were often equipped with Swiss made movements or movements manufactured in house.
Dress Watches: GUB Glashütte produced elegant dress watches suitable for formal occasions. These watches had classic designs, often featuring thin cases, clean dials and leather straps.
Sports Watches: GUB Glashütte also manufactured sports watches designed for outdoor activities. These watches were more robust and durable, with features like water resistance, shock resistance and additional complications such as chronographs.
Military Watches: As a state owned company, GUB Glashütte also produced military watches for the German armed forces. These watches were built to withstand harsh conditions and had features like luminous dials for better visibility in low light.
Chronometers: GUB Glashütte was known for its precision timekeeping. They produced chronometer certified watches, which underwent rigorous testing to ensure accurate timekeeping.
It’s important to note that GUB Glashütte ceased operations in 1994. However, the legacy of their watches lives on through various successor companies in Glashütte, such as Glashütte Original and Nomos Glashütte. In 2000, the Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH was liquidated due to financial difficulties. The company’s assets were acquired by Nomos Glashütte, another watchmaking company based in Glashütte.
