Heavy gold and diamond set, skeletonized watch by Breguet
–
A rare and heavy Swiss gold and diamond-set open faced skeletonized two-train grande sonnerie clock watch with trip-minute repeating carillon, perpetual calendar, and moon phases, circa 1980. Sold on November 24, 1980, for 280,000 francs. The watch features a gilded movement with two trains, tandem winding, highly decorative engraved plates and bridges with scrolling foliage, lever escapement, 44 jewels, a compensation balance, swan-neck precision regulation, three polished steel hammers carillon striking gongs on the hours and quarters, and trip carillon minute repeating on demand. It is signed Breguet and numbered 1070. The dial is skeletonized with diamond-set hour indexes, four gold chapter rings for day, month with leap year indication, date, and subsidiary seconds combined with a lapis lazuli aperture for moon phases with a gold and blued disc.

The case is made of 18k gold with substantial stepped and rounded bezels, a milled band, and a cabochon sapphire-set trip repeat button to the crown. There is also a strike/silent slide beside the pendant marked A/S for arret/sonnerie, and the pendant is signed and numbered Breguet 1070. Accompanied by a Breguet certificate dated August 31, 2020.

It is extremely rare to find a mechanical watch of this complexity that was produced in 1980, a year when the watch industry was still recovering from the impact of the Quartz Crisis. This watch is almost certainly a special commission, as evidenced by its skeletonized design, intricately engraved movement, and impressive, weighty gold case. These features stand as a testament to Breguet’s unwavering belief in the enduring artistry of watchmaking.
–
The watch is in good overall condition and functions well. Its movement runs continuously and strikes the hours and quarters in full. The calendar functions are also advancing correctly, accounting for the differing lengths of months. The dial has a couple of minor scratches on the chapter rings, while the case has some light scuffs.
Signed: Breguet
