Louis-Benjamin Audemars founded Louis Audemars & Cie in 1811 in the hamlet of Le Crêt Meylan near Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. He specialized in producing high-quality watch movements and precision complications such as repeater and chronograph mechanisms, which were hand-made and considered among the finest in the world. His ambition was to make complete case watches signed with his name, but he died before achieving this goal. His sons returned home around 1850 after training with different watchmakers and began using their combined knowledge to create their brand. However, they faced competition from companies that had equipped their factories with production machinery, which considerably reduced the purchasing price of watches. To counter this, the Audemars began making complicated watches that machines could not make, reaching perfect coordination of design, precision, and production. They were the first enterprise in the Vallée de Joux to make complete watches from start to finish and sign them with their name. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt and liquidated in 1885 due to its lack of business acumen.
