A rare French gold and porcelain open faced verge pocket watch, circa 1770.
White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minute numerals.
The porcelain case back is polychrome painted with Watteauesque figures in a landscape surrounded by scrollwork, a matching bezel.
Gilt full plate verge movement, pierced and engraved balance bridge, plain flat three arm balance, baluster pillars, signed.

Watteauesque. Reminiscent of the works of the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), who revitalized the waning baroque style and painted scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm, suffused with a theatrical air.

Jean Antoine Watteau, better known as Antoine Watteau, was born in Valencijn on October 10, 1684, and died in Nogent-sur-Marne on July 18, 1721. He was a French painter of the rococo period. Watteau’s place of birth was conquered by the French in 1678.
