Open faced 18K gold pocket watch by Moulinié Frères & Cie.
–
A rare and very fine Swiss repeating pocket watch, circa 1830. The timepiece features an 18K gold, à goutte, engine-turned case. It houses a signed cylinder movement with an hour and quarter-hour repeater. The dial, typical of Geneva around 1830, showcases silver floral engine-turning with Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track, a rare small subsidiary dial for the seconds at three, and golden Breguet hands. While the movement runs, it does not function in every position, and the striking mechanism repeats far too quickly, necessitating a revision. This exceptionally fine and rare watch originally came equipped with a duplex escapement.

Moulinié (à Genève) was a company founded by Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié in 1795, which was also known as Moulinié Frères & Cie. In 1796, Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié and Jean-François Bautte registered a company with a nine-year contract that existed since August 1, 1793. Later, on October 1, 1804, they founded a new company named Moulinié, Bautte & Co for four years and added Jean-Gabriel Moynier to the team. This time, the company was a watch case manufacturer and in business with the watch and jewellery trade. From 1808 to 1821, after Moulinié retired, the firm was known as Moulinié, Bautte & Moynier. The company continued as Moulinié Frères & Cie with the sons of Jean-François Moulinié and Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié Jr.
