Silver gentleman’s watch with decimal time by Jules LeCoultre
–
A remarkable Swiss gentleman’s pocket watch with decimal time, circa 1894. Decimal watches became popular for a second time around the end of the 19th century.
The silver case is lovingly decorated with vivid equine engraving. The cuvette is signed: Jules LeCoultre 1894. The enamel dial has as many as three hour indicators on the dial: next to the traditional 12-hour ring are auxiliary 10-hour and 24-hour dials; the seconds are also displayed in both 60 and 100 divisions; the dial has a blue, gold and black colour scheme and is very finely executed. And the movement is a divided 4/5 plate movement with a lever escapement and screw compensation balance.

Jules Louis LeCoultre, Swiss watchmaker
He was born on May 20, 1867 in Sainte-Croix. He was the son of Charles Auguste LeCoultre (1832-?) And Sophie Marianne Margot. Father Charles Auguste LeCoultre was probably also a watchmaker, this was the son of Charles Philippe LeCoultre and Jeanne Françoise Piguet.
–
Jules Louis married Louise Élise Simond (1861-1925) and 7 children were born from this marriage. Only the son Gaston Édouard LeCoultre became a watchmaker. The son Alfred Louis LeCoultre became a mechanic and probably worked in Locminé, Morbihan, France. According to an advertisement in the newspaper of the Féderation de l’Industrie Horlogère Suisse (FH) from November 23, 1912, Jules was working in Tavannes.
–
Jules Louis LeCoultre died on May 2, 1938 in L’Isle, Vaud, at the age of 70.
–
The watch shown was very likely made by Jules Louis LeCoultre, but it is possible that Jules Ami LeCoultre or Jules Henri LeCoultre was the manufacturer.

Signed: Jules LeCoultre 1894
