–
A massive English gold and enamel pocket watch with regulator dial and center seconds with stop feature, circa 1780. Gilt cylinder movement, diamond endstone, cock pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls, above a grotesque mask, the movement fitted with a stop lever for the seconds, gilt metal dust cap. White enamel dial with multiple hairline cracks, subsidiary mean time dial below 12 o’clock and with center seconds. Consular case centered by armorials including motto ‘Elevorubi Consumer’, encircled by translucent blue and green enamel against an engine turned ground, the bezels further heightened by opaque white enamel beading, winding shutter in the center panel opens by means of a lever fitted near the case hinge. Dial and dust cap and movement signed, case stamped with casemaker’s mark ‘RP’.

The coat of arms featured on the reservse of the present watch is for the Kotschubey Family, from the Crimean Peninsula and who are descendants of Tartar nobility. The inscription underneath the shield reads ‘Flevor Ubi Consumor’.

For two similar watches see, T. Cammerer Cuss, The English Watch 1585-1970, where it is noted that the center seconds can be set to the second and thus acts as a simple stopwatch. Further similarities include a nearly identical dial with eccentric hours and minutes and one case also stamped ‘RP’ probably for Richard Palmer.
