A Swiss 18 carat gold and enamel jumping centre seconds striking cylinder pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1830. Glazed, mirror-polished steel bridge movement, Lépine calibre, cylinder escapement, key-winding, standing barrel, steel train, three-arm steel balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours and outer minute divisions, Arabic 60, 45, 30 and 15. The case back with a polychrome enamel bouquet of flowers over a black ground, two different enamel techniques are used namely champlevé and painted enamel imitating Chinese cloisonné work. Movement signed.

Vaucher Frères, Fleurier, was founded by Alfred Vaucher. After his death in 1840 the sons Alfred, Edouard and James-Henri continued the business and specialized in dealing in Chinese clocks and watches. In 1843 they opened a branch in Kanton and later another one in Shanghai.
