Silver, enamel and pearl set lever watch attributed to J. Ullmann & Co.

Rare Swiss silver, enamel and pearl set open faced center seconds pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1890. Glazed, gilt floral engraved bridge movement, key winding, a flying barrel, side lever escapement and monometallic balance with blued steel weights. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions, Arabic quarter hour numerals and a decorative center. On the case back a polychrome enamel miniature portrait of a young lady dressed in oriental style and hung with gold jewellery on an engine turned translucent red enamelled ground, the bezels on both sides are set with half pearls. Case numbered.

Around 1880, J. Ullmann & Co. was founded by Jacques Ullmann in Fleurier, Switzerland. In a short time, there were very successful branches in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin, Paris and Vladivostok. Ullmann worked with, among others, Edouard Juvet, John Barwise and Tavannes Watch Co. In 1918, he bought the Bovet company.
