Unsigned gold, enamel, and pearl-set cruciform watch
–
An unusual Swiss gold, enamel, and pearl-set cruciform keyless cylinder watch with a polychrome enamel painting of the Madonna and Child after Raphael, circa 1880. This watch features an oval gilded movement with wolf’s tooth winding, cylinder escapement, and a plain flat three-arm balance. The dial is white enamel with Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands.
–
The crucifix case is made of gold with a pierced foliate design, centrally crossed with black enamel panels heightened with pearls. It also has a hinged cover to the dial with a polychrome enamel painting of the Virgin and Child after Raphael, framed by diamonds and surrounded by a gold wreath. The monogrammed hinged back cover has a decoratively engraved border, a small pusher at the base of the central black enamel band to open the dial cover, a winding crown beneath the bow, and a pusher for engaging the handset at the upper left side. The case back is numbered 7966.

Dimension: 81 x 56 mm

The movement is currently running, and the hand-setting is operational. There is some tarnishing on the plates. The dial is in good condition when viewed through the glass. The case is generally in good condition with light scuffs and scratches, and there is further scratching on the enamel painted dial cover. The monogram on the back appears to be ‘MG’. Additionally, there are two very small import control marks for the Netherlands dating to 1953–1955, one on the side of the crucifix and one on the diamond-set bezel.
