Gerald Charles Genta, Swiss watch designer
Gérald Charles Genta was born in Geneva on May 1, 1931, to an Italian father and a Swiss father. He completed an apprenticeship as a jewellery designer and graduated in 1951 with a federal diploma.
–
Gérald Genta is known both for his line of watches and for his collaborations with other luxury brands, including IWC, Omega, Rolex, Cartier, Bulgari, Universal Genève, Baume & Mercier, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. Christie’s in New York called Genta the “Fabergé of clock designers”, while The Wall Street Journal described his works as “the most complicated and expensive clocks in the world”. In 1972, Gérald Genta wrote watch history with the stainless steel watch Royal Oak designed for Audemars Piguet. 1976 Patek Philippe presented the luxury sports watch Nautilus created by Gérald Genta. In 1994 he designed the “Grande Sonnerie”, the world’s most complicated wristwatch (price around one million dollars).
–
Already in 1969, Genta had founded his watch brand Gérald Genta. Since he saw himself as a craftsman and artist and wanted to devote himself to painting, he sold his brand to an Asian company in 1998, which sold it to the Bulgari Group.
–
In 2001 he founded the Gérald Charles brand again and launched his watches again.
–
Gérald Charles Genta died on August 17 2011, in Monaco.
