A very fine Swiss gold, enamel and diamond-set cylinder pendant watch in the form of a beetle, circa 1870.
A beetle-shaped case, the wings engine-turned translucent cobalt blue enamelled and set with rose-cut diamonds, the head and belly lifelike engraved, the eyes set with two cut diamonds, the inside of the case back with a glazed cover to insert a picture. A heart-shaped gold dome. White enamel dial with black radial Roman hours, outer minute track with blue Arabic five-minute numerals and blued spade hands. Frosted gilt heart-shaped bridge movement with a cylinder escapement, key wind and a three-arm brass balance.

The condition of this watch is exceptionally good. As these watches were worn as pendants and the opening wings were subjected to wear and tear all the time, it is very unusual to find a piece where the enamel has not been restored.
