Gold open faced lever chronograph

A very fine Swiss 18 carat gold open faced minute repeating chronograph keyless lever pocket watch by J.J. Badollet & Cie in Geneva, circa 1910. Polished case with a wide curved bezel, concealed hinge and hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, an outer minute track, fifth of a second divisions, outermost Arabic five minute numerals, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, a 30 minute register at 12 and original blued steel spade hands. Frosted gilt movement with 32 jewels, a calibrated straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring with overcoil, swan neck micrometre regulator and steel chronograph work, repeating with two hammers on two gongs activated by a slide on the band. Movement signed.

Badollet & Cie. were horologists and makers of watch cases. The company was registered on November 1, 1880, under number 43. They received 1st prize at the Observatory contest for chronometry in 1872 with 267.9 points out of 350, in 1873 with 229 points out of 350, in 1874 with 264 points out of 350 and in 1874-1875 with 213 points out of 350. In 1874, Badollet tied with H.R. Ekegrén for those contestants presenting a minimum of three chronometers.
