Unsigned gold and enamel pocket watch
–
A magnificent gold and enamel Swiss automata watch, titled The Blacksmith’s Forge, circa 1810. This watch features a gilded movement with verge escapement, a regulation arm extending to the outer rim, and visibility to the edge of the dial. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, and a winding aperture positioned at 9 o’clock, all complemented by elegant gold hands. The case features gold bezels and a pendant, adorned with a polychrome enamel-painted pastoral scene next to a river and a bridge. The sky is crafted from translucent deep blue enamel over an engine-turned ground, while the foreground showcases varicoloured applied gold automata depicting a blacksmith at work, with his assistant tending to the furnace and operating the bellows. In the background, a windmill turns, and water flows through a rill to the right of the bridge. The automata can be wound through an aperture above the blacksmith and operated by a lever at 6 o’clock. The polished gold bezels are decorated with geometric patterning, and the pendant bears the maker’s mark PC incuse with a pellet between and numbered.

The watch dial appears to be in good overall condition. The case has scuffs throughout and some indentations. The movement is running, and the automata appears to be working well, with the figures, windmill, and water all operational. The bezels have scuffs and scratches. The polychrome enamel painted scene is in good overall condition, with some slight chipping to the surface around the winding aperture.
