In 1881 Achille Ditesheim founded a workshop with six watchmakers in La Chaux-de-Fonds to establish pocket watches. In 1886 the brothers Léopold and Isidore Ditesheim joined Achille Ditesheim’s company . The company was now called LAI Ditesheim. LAI Ditesheim began developing wristwatches around 1900.
In 1905 a new production building was built and “Movado” (Esperanto: always on the move) was registered as the company name. Movado launched the Polyplan in 1912, followed by the Ermeto case watch in 1926. Movado opened its first agency in the USA (New York) in 1924. Movado manufactured a large number of different calendar watches, mostly in gold cases.
Due to the collaboration with Zenith, the company headquarters were relocated to Le Locle in 1971.
In 1983 Movado joined the Movado Group, Inc. At the end of 2003, it also took over the renowned manufacturer Ebel.
