Gold and enamel pocket watch by Malignon
–
A Swiss lady’s gold and polychrome enamel painted hunting cased cylinder watch, circa 1845. The watch features a gilded bar movement with a cylinder escapement and a plain flat three arm balance. It has a white enamel dial marked with Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, and moon hands. The gold case features a restored oval plaque on the centre of the back, adorned with polychrome enamel depicting fruit and flowers, bordered with heart shaped motifs enhanced with light blue and white enamel. Additionally, the polished gold cuvette is signed Malignon, à Genève, and both the case back and cuvette are numbered.

The movement is running, showing signs of dirt, scuffs, and scratches. The dial has hairline cracks, and there are some chips at the edges, particularly around the dial screws. The case displays some losses to the decorative enamel borders, while the central polychrome enamel painted scene has been restored in soft enamel and has discoloured. The inside back is stamped 18k and ‘G’ within an ornate cartouche, along with an indistinct stamp, possibly AM.

Signed: Malignon à Genève
