Unsigned gilt metal and rock crystal pendant watch
–
A small Swiss gilt metal and rock crystal shell-shaped verge watch, circa 1635. The watch has a gilded full plate movement which is decorated with intricate foliage and a delicate flower design. It has a verge escapement, a pierced and engraved pinned-on balance cock and foot, a plain flat steel balance, wheel and click set-up, fusee and gut line, and turned baluster pillars. The gilded dial features a narrow silver chapter ring with Roman numerals, half-hour divisions, and a blued steel hand. At the centre of the dial, a townscape is delicately engraved, surrounded by a gilded outer border chased and engraved with scrolling foliage. The gilt metal case features engraved bezels and multi-faceted rock crystal covers in a stylized flower form. The plain pendant has a leaf-shaped base and a long terminal.

The decoration on the dial is still clear, but it is a bit dirty and has some tarnishing. There is a small crack in the rock crystal above the 2 o’clock position. As for the case, there is a small crack at the edge near the terminal, but otherwise, the rock crystal seems to be in good condition. The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, with light scuffs and scratches on the backplate.
