Copper open faced pocket watch by Jean Francois Lachis

A Swiss early and rare one-handed pair cased verge pocket watch with alarm, circa 1670. The watch features a signed fire gilt full plate movement a keywind equipped with a chain and fusee system. It has one hammer, baluster movement pillars, a three-arm steel balance, and a finely engraved and pierced balance bridge. There are two cases: the outer case is made of copper and polished, with a large lateral hinge; the inner case is also made of copper and features a rear bell. The inner case is beautifully adorned with floral engravings and piercings. The fire gilt champlevé dial showcases inlaid radial Roman hour markers, a central alarm disc with Arabic numerals, and an iron hand.

Jean-François Lachis was born on September 30, 1627, in Geneva as the son of Paul Lachis (1595-1635) and Marie Thellusson. Jean-François married Clermonde Rousseau on July 24, 1653, in Geneva. Clermonde was the daughter of Jean Rousseau and Lydie Mussard. Nine children were born from this marriage, but only one grew up. Jean-François was the teacher of his brother-in-law, David Rousseau, in 1653. He died on November 4, 1699, in Geneva, 72 years old. The Clock Museum of Besançon, France has a silver pocket watch by Jean-François Lachish in the collection.
