Gold hunting cased pocket watch by Jean Fazy & Fils
–
An extremely rare Empire Swiss gold enamel pocket watch with jumping digital time indication, circa 1810.
This exquisite watch originally belonged to King Farouk I of Egypt (1920-1965). Later, it was sold in the late 1970s and became a part of the Collection Mozahafarian in Teheran. The watch is made of 18K gold and enamel, featuring an engine-turned back with beautifully engraved floral patterns and cobalt blue enamel. The front of the watch boasts a polychrome miniature painting of a young lady donning a plumed hat adorned with diamonds. At the press of a button, the hat lifts to show the time, which is indicated by bezels with white, gold, and green Champlevé enamel on a blue background. The dome of the watch is numbered and signed. The dial consists of two revolving Arabic chapter rings. The watch is powered by a full plate movement, which is key-wound and fire-gilt. It features a chain/fusee, a verge escapement, and a finely engraved and pierced balance bridge.

He was born in 1734 to Jean-Salomon F. Trembley (1709-1782), an Indian printer in the late 17th century. From which Briançonnais had fled to Geneva. He was the brother of Marc-Conrad Fazy and Jean-Salomon. The three brothers made for the Swedish court and the Russian tsarina Catherine II in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. Marc-Conrad founded a watch and jewellery factory in Moscow and made his brother Jean, a partner.
Jean Fazy married Elisabeth Anne Eckström in Sweden in 1760; four children were born from this marriage. The son Pierre Philippe Fazy also became a watchmaker and married Louise Pierrette Dufour, a daughter of Etienne Dufour, on May 15, 1797. Jean Fazy died in Moscow in 1812 at the age of 78.
