Unsigned gilt metal automaton watch
–
A Swiss quarter repeating automaton watch with Jacquemarts in a later gilt metal case, circa 1800. This watch features a gilded full plate movement, verge escapement, a pierced and engraved balance bridge and repeats on coiled gongs. It has a white enamel chapter ring with Arabic numerals, a skeletonized background with Jacquemarts holding hammers for striking and an automaton goat on a blued steel background that nods its head when the plunger is depressed. The watch is housed in a later gilt metal case with a gilt cuvette and ribbed band.

The movement is running, but the strike mechanism is not working. The dial has multiple cracks extending to the chapter ring and later hands, but the classical figure is not affected. The goat nods its head when the repeat plunger is depressed, indicating signs of repair work. The case is scuffed and tarnished throughout and is stamped G.D. with I above, number 3558.
