Tortoiseshell 1/8 repeating watch
–
Exceptionally large and rare South German verge watch with very rare a toc & a tact 1/8-repeater, Johann Riel in Stadtamhof (Regensburg), circa 1780-1820. Silver pair case, outer case covered with tortoiseshell, inner case plain, band with sound holes, bell, signed verge movement, very rare repeating of the hours, quarters and half-quarters, choice between repeating on bell (a tact) and silent repeating on case (a toc), signed original enamel dial and presumably original hands, dial unfortunately restored, movement intact.

Striking mechanism chimes uncontrolled and needs revision. From the technical point of view the watch is very rare and a very interesting collector’s item. Also the watchmaker is interesting for collectors of South German watches. Many of his watches are part of important collections and museums. According to Abeler there are 8 watches by Johann Riel in the Vienna Watch Museum!
