Silver open faced cylinder watch
–
A gentleman’s rare pocket watch HORA CHRISTI – a present to a missionary of the African mission order, circa 1910.
A silver case, enamel dial, bridge movement, Cal. LeCoultre, cylinder escapement, large three-arm brass balance.
The lavishly decorated case has a bold relief with the crucifixion scene of Jesus on the back and an engraved rosary around the rim. The case band with a banner: VIGILATE QUIA NESCITIS DIEM NEQUE HORAM (Matthew 25, 13: “Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour”). The trefoil-shaped pendant is engraved with a representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the Holy Ghost. The 12-hour fields on the dial show the Passion of the Christ, and the blued steel hands are shaped like the tools used for the flagellation of Christ.
