Silver World Time pocket watch by Beguelin
–
A large and unusual Swiss silver double dialled 24 hour world time watch, circa 1890. It features a nickel movement with decorative engraving on the bridges, a lever escapement, and a compensated balance. The top plate is numbered 3142 and B 42. There are two dials. The first dial is white enamel with an outer chapter ring calibrated in Roman numerals from I to XII. Daytime hours are displayed in white, while night hours are set against a grey background. This dial also has a central rotating enamel disc showing polychrome time zones for 25 world locations. The second dial is also white enamel and shows polychrome time zones for 43 world locations, with a central rotating dial calibrated from 0 to 60. The reverse of this dial is numbered 3142. The case is silver with a plain polished finish.

The movement is functioning. The hands set smoothly, and the two central revolving discs operate properly. On the front dial, there is a minor repair to the coloured banner at the edge of the central revolving dial near Tehran, and a small chip beneath the 12 o’clock position. The small central revolving dial on the back has a hairline crack. The case is tarnished and dirty.

This watch is likely crafted according to British Patent No. 11,050, referenced in The Horological Journal of September 1886: Leopold Beguelin, Tramelin, Switzerland—Improvements in Watches, termed Universal Watches, dated 17 September 1885. The invention allows the user to determine the accurate time in major cities worldwide with ease. It features two fixed annular dials, one on the watch face and the other on the back, and two moving dials, one rotating with the minute hand and the other with the hour hand.
