Silver and enamel on gold watch by Abraham Cailliatte
–
An important Swiss gold and silver verge pocket watch with a painted polychrome enamel portrait, circa 1660. This antique timepiece features a full plate movement with gilt plates, an early chain fusee, a verge escapement, and an oval pattern balance cock that is pierced and engraved with foliage. The worm-and-wheel set-up is adorned with pierced blued steel brackets and an engraved silver setting disc. The inner case boasts a painted design and a similar frame that surrounds the polychrome enamel portrait. On the inside, there is another enamel portrait on turquoise ground, which is centred within a frame. The silver outer case is pierced and engraved. The dial has a white enamel chapter ring with black Roman numerals and half-hour markers. The dial’s centre is decorated with enamel scrolls, and there is a single hand for telling time.

This watch has been created by Abraham Cailliatte, a watchmaker who lived from 1642 to 1710. The enamelling on the case is believed to have been done by Jean-Pierre Huaud, also known as the younger Huaud, who was born in Switzerland in 1655 and died in 1723. The watch’s back plate has been signed by Abraham Cailliatte.
The watch has two markings. The first marking is an eagle head with a single outline, which is the Paris mark of gold used from 1838 to the present day. The second marking is the same as the first one. Both markings are located on the head of the pendant.
