A very fine numbered precision pocket watch made for Tiffany & Co by James Nardin in Le Locle, Switzerland, circa  1870. The open faced plain case of this watch crafted from 18 carat gold has a coin edged band and the cuvette is numbered. The white enamel dial has a ring with black Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and steel Breguet hands. The very fine anker chronometer movement has a lever escapement, a fine adjusting device and wolf’s toothing.
The dial and movement are signed Tiffany & Co, the cuvette is signed James Nardin Locle.

James Nardin
James Nardin, a Swiss watchmaker and watch manufacturer, was born on October 20, 1814, in Le Locle to Henry-Louis Nardin and Julie Robert. Father Henry-Louis was a cousin of Ulysse Nardin. James Nardin married Sophie-Louise Perret-Jeanneret (1816-1886) . He worked in the Chaux de Fonds under the name of James Nardin-Perret, Perret being his wife’s name. He was granted a U.S. patent (No. 93,735) in 1869 for a self-winding watch and deposited a marine chronometer at the Neuchatel Observatory in 1873 and the company won a Gold Medal for horology at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878. He was the father of James Nardin junior (1836-1880), who continued the business after his father’s death on May 22, 1885.
