A rare, large and heavy Swiss 18 carat yellow gold keyless minute repeating hunting cased pocket watch, circa 1880. An engine turned case with polished borders, a reeded band, the front cover with an applied gold scroll monogram J.A.H. The back cover with the applied gold crest of the Holmes family with the motto Justum et Tenacem Propositi. Hinged gold cuvette, glazed gold rimmed cover to view the movement. White enamel dial with narrow radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds and blued steel Breguet hands. Nickel plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 31 jewels, counterpoised straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by a slide on the band. Dial and movement signed.
