Flemish early and remarkable verge watch
–
A great, early and rare oval fully engraved pendant watch with one hand, circa 1571.
Gilt brass and polished steel full plate movement, fusee, verge escapement, plain two-arm iron balance without balance spring. The use of brass and steel for the wheels of the action seems to indicate a Flemish origin for the watch. The primitive form of the cock would appear to support the early date. Gilded brass fully engraved dial, Roman radial hours, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, and blued steel single-hand.
The engraving on the cover of the gilded brass case is from a print by Jacob Binck (ca. 1500–1569) titled A Roman Soldier Presenting Grapes to a Nude Woman. Other engravings on the case allude to allegories of faithful wives. The watch is signed with WA conjoined on the movement and has an inscription below the dial that reads 1571.
