Silver oignon quarter repeater by Pascal Hubert

A lavishly decorated French silver quarter repeating verge oignon watch, circa 1700. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, ratchet wheel set up with blued steel spring, one hammer, balance with mock pendulum, fine florally engraved balance bridge. White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes. The case back is decorated with two oval medallions with engraved, facing profile portraits of a noble gentleman and a fine lady, a crown above, a pair of billing doves sit below, on both the front and back the rim is intricately engraved with volutes, petals and acanthus, rear bell.

The French watchmaker Pascal Hubert was born around 1625 and according to Tardy, he became a master in 1649. He worked with Jacques Gloria Sr., who was one of the first makers to create watches without fusee. Hubert died probably circa 1701.
