Fire-gilded brass open faced pocket watch by Andreas Nagl

An Austrian brass open faced hour striking verge pocket watch, circa 1680. Gilt full plate movement, chain and fusee, one hammer, a florally engraved barrel for strike mechanism, three-arm iron balance, very finely florally engraved and pierced balance cock. A later, custom-made, white enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute dots and Arabic quarter-hour numerals. Plain case with the remains of fire gilding, the back pierced on the edges, rear bell. Movement signed.

Andreas Nagl was born in 1624 in Vienna and died in 1710. He became a master in 1667. Nagl is known for several table, bracket and night clocks as well as a miniature pendant watch, which was, at a size of only 33 x 18 mm, one of the smallest timepieces of its time. He was considered to be one of the most important Vienna watchmakers.
