Silver one handed astronomical watch by Friedrich Hübner

An extremely rare German silver open faced one handed astronomical verge pocket watch with full calendar and moon phases, circa 1645. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, a verge escapement, three arm iron balance and an engraved, florally pierced balance cock. The silver champlevé dial is elaborately engraved with foliage, a movable silver disc with concentric calendar indications in the upper half, the outer ring for displaying the date, a chapter ring for the months, another for the display of the signs of the zodiac, one for the associated symbols and in the center the length of the months, on the right a round aperture for the phases of the moon and moon age, on the left a fan shaped aperture for the days of the week and their regents, in the lower half the indication of time with engraved Roman hours, half hour markers and a finely florally engraved center. A plain case.

The signature of the Bremen watchmaker Friedrich Hübner can be found under the floral tendril decoration of the balance cock and points to a modernization towards the end of the 17th century.

The German watchmaker Friedrich Hübner worked in the first half of the 17th century and is considered one of the earliest watchmakers in Bremen. He died on October 8, 1648, two weeks before the Thirty Years’ War ended with the conclusion of the Peace of Westphalia.
