An English deck chronometer with 56 hour power reserve in a brass inlaid mahogany box, circa 1910. Delivered to the Royal Navy HS 1. Brass movement, chain and fusee, a spring detent escapement according to Thomas Earnshaw, and a secondary error compensation balance with four screws and two weights. Silvered dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track, 56 hour power reserve indication at 12 o’clock, subsidiary seconds at 6 and spade & whip hand. Dial signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers.

This marine chronometer was in service with the Royal Navy from its purchase on October 20th, 1875, to March 6th, 1914. In 1893, it was in the Colaba Observatory in Bombay, India and in 1901, it was transferred to the ship HMS Vestal. Stations in Hong Kong, Bombay and Malta followed. In 1920, this marine chronometer was moved to the ship HMS Chatham before being handed over to the New Zealand government in 1921. In 1941, it was sent to Singapore and in 1943 to Colaba before finally being sold in 1965.
