Three colour gold open faced watch

An exceptional, very fine and heavy English multicoloured gold open faced cylinder pocket watch, circa 1830. Full plate movement, key wind, chain and fusee, a three arm steel balance. The gold cuvette is engraved Smith Jeweller to H.R. Highness the Princess Charlotte of Wales. Grained gold dial with applied gold Arabic hour numerals, outer minute divisions and spade hands. The case back is partially engine turned, decorated with punched vine leaves and a raised butterfly in three coloured gold relief, the bezels, pendant and bow are decorated to match, a reeded band, maker’s mark LC for Louis Comtesse Soho in London. Cuvette signed, movement signed and numbered.

Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796-1817) was a British princess of the House of Hanover. She was born in London as the only child of the British and Hanoverian Crown Prince George, Prince of Wales and his wife Caroline von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. She married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, who later became King of the Belgians and died just a year later.
