Joachim Hovenschiöld (also known as Hofwenskold, Hovenskjold, Howenskiöld or Hovenschold) from Stockholm, Sweden, was active from 1767 to 1800.
In the late 18th century, there was an extensive trade in counterfeit pocket watches, usually copies of English silver watches by watchmakers such as John Ward from London but even the Stockholm watchmakers fell victim to counterfeiters, such as Joachim Hovenschiöld, who in the autumn of 1789, in one of the newspapers, warned against counterfeiting in his name: “I have considered it an obligation to hereby publicly confess how I have experienced, time after time, that several foreign watches, with my name on the board and inside the work, are being circumvented and most of the counties are excommunicated, which, far from being my work, are done so badly and recklessly as to damage not only my credit, but also Swedish manufacturing works in general to obscurity, if such frauds were not detected, in order to warn the public about these fake and less capable watches, I have the honor to warn that all those who worked with me are inside the case provided with a competent check and stamp, which they do not have. Stockholm, October 1, 1789. Joach. Howenschöld.”
