Gold and enamel verge with granulation decoration

A fine French 18 carat gold, enamel and hardstone set open faced key wind pocket watch made by Frères Bordier in Geneva, circa 1830. The gilt full plate movement with a fusee verge escapement, pierced and engraved balance bridge, and silver regulation. Guilloché gilt dial with Roman hour numerals on a brushed chapter ring, outer minute divisions, a winding aperture at 1 o’clock and gilt hands. A case with applied granulation decoration and the polychrome enamel portrait of a classical maiden with flowers surrounded by red hardstone set decoration on the reverse. Case and movement signed.

The present timepiece has been decorated with the technique of granulation. Granulation is where tiny spheres of metal are created and then fused to the watch case. This technique is thousands of years old and requires extreme skill and dexterity.
