An 18 carat gold hunting cased keyless United States Presidential presentation pocket watch made by the American Waltham Watch Company in Waltham, Massachusetts, circa 1868. The Swiss lever movement with a cut and compensated bimetallic balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track with red Arabic five minute numerals, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued steel spade hands. The engine turned hinged case with a presentation engraving on the cuvette. Dial signed, movement signed and numbered, case numbered.

Presidents throughout the 19th century would officially recognize foreigners who saved the life of an American at sea by presenting them with either a finely engraved gold pocket watch or a set of binoculars. The program was started by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 and continued until the late 19th century. The National Archives state that the Secretary of State would recommend individuals for the honour. The current watch was presented by the 24th President, Grover Cleveland and is inscribed:

“From the President of the United States to Captain Johnson Grant of the British bark G.S. Penry in recognition of his humane services in effecting the rescue of the master and crew of the American schooner Maggie Dalling February 12 – 1895.”
