Significant English 18 carat gold open faced quarter repeating chronometer, Hallmarked London 1815. Plain à goutte. Chronometer movement in manner of Earnshaw with Pennington chronometer balance, helical hairspring, diamond endstone, florally engraved fire gilt cock, extremely rare complication for a pocket chronometer, repeating the hours, quarters and half quarters à toc. White enamel dial with Roman numerals and rare, blued steel hands. Case maker’s mark WW, case and dial signed and numbered.

This chronometer has been known for a long time and is part of the published Barraud list. One of the rarest listed chronometers by Barraud.

Paul Philip Barraud (1750-1820) was an English watchmaker in London. His parents were Francis Gabriel Barraud and Magadalen Benine born Crespin, who was a daughter of a well-known Huguenot silversmith. He became a member of the Clockmakers Company in London in 1796 and was promoted to Master in 1810/11. He formed a partnership with George Jamieson and William Howells. He had seven children and his sons Frederick Joseph, John and James joined him in the business. Between 1796 and 1820 they produced over 1,000 chronometers.
