A fine English 18 carat gold hunting cased keyless lever pocket watch, London Hallmarks for 1887-1888. Frosted gilt 3/4 plate movement, spring barrel secured by a bridge, lateral lever escapement with lift on the pallets, cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold meantime and temperature adjustment screws, blued steel flat balance spring, index regulator. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at IX and original blued steel spade hands. Engine turned case, polished borders and band, mastermark EM, frosted gilt dust cap.Dial, case and movement signed.

Edward John Dent (1790 – 1853). A celebrated watchmaker, worked with Richard Rippon circa 1810 and on his own account in 1814. The firm of Arnold & Dent was active from 1830 to 1840, after which he worked alone. He made the clock for the Royal Exchange and received the order for the ‘Big Ben’ clock, which was completed by his stepson Frederick.
