Gold open faced cylinder watch
–
A French or Belgian 18 carat yellow gold open faced dress pocket watch, circa 1900. This pocket watch has a mechanical hand wound movement with a traditional cylinder escapement layout, frosted gilt bridges, a mainplate secured by polished steel screws, an exposed train of brass wheels, and an index regulator. The white enamel dial shows black Roman numeral hour markers, a prominent outer minute track with large Arabic five minute indicators (5–60), and a sunken subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. The dial has its original ornate dark toned hands, including a delicate counterbalanced seconds hand.
–
The 18 carat yellow gold case features a classic open face design. It features a hand crafted case back with a complex guilloché engine turned pattern, a flowing outer border of detailed floral and leaf motifs, and a central unengraved shield shaped cartouche. The case has a reeded caseband profile, a deeply fluted winding crown with a prominent oval bow ring at 12 o’clock, and a minor shock to the rim profile consistent with its age. The high polish interior of the case back shows official hallmark stampings and a serial registration number. Inside is a solid, polished 18 carat yellow gold inner dust cover (cuvette) protecting the movement.
