Gold, shagreen, gilded metal and steel watch by C. Hallifax
–
A probably Dutch extremely decorative repoussé gold triple-cased verge watch in a protective transport case made of shagreen, circa 1783. This watch features a full plate movement with a verge escapement, a pierced and engraved balance cock, and a silvered regulation dial. The white enamel dial has radial Roman numerals, an outer arcaded minute track, Arabic five-minute numerals, and steel hands. Additionally, the watch comes with three cases: a shagreen transport case, a gold outer case with an elaborate repoussé scene that is secured with a large lateral hinge, and a smooth gold inner case.

The watchmaker who created this timepiece was C. Hallifax, and he was active around 1783. The watch was forged and marked C. Hallifax/LONDON/14439 on its movement. Additionally, it has several other marks, including a leopard’s head crowned, a London date letter h for 1783-84, a lion passant, an incised R P, a six-petaled flower, and a crowned O. It’s worth noting that the crowned O is a Dutch mark found on old pieces that were imported after 1807.
