In 1874, Johannes Dürrstein founded the watch wholesaler Dürrstein & Co in Dresden and built up a trading network in Europe. Already in 1874, he took over sole distribution of Adolph Lange in Glashütte. On 1 January 1893 Johannes Dürrstein founded the Uhrenfabrik Union, Glashütte i/S to be able to offer cheaper watches on the market. Dürrstein died in 1901. After his death, only his brothers and later his widow took over the management. During the Great Depression of 1926, the company had to file for bankruptcy.
