An English 18 carat gold keyless wind half hunter pocket watch, London Hallmark for 1877. Gilt 3/4 plate English lever movement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance, snail cam regulation, stamped ‘AD Fmsz’.
White enamel dial, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6, blued steel spade hands. Polished hinged case, Roman numeral chapter to front, presentation inscription to cuvette dated 1878, armorial to back with motto ‘Esse quam videri’. Dial & movement signed, case stamped GHH.

The motto on the case back “Esse quam videri” translates as “To be, rather than appear to be”. The inscription on the cuvette relates to the Sturgis family of Clipston, Northamptonshire and Russell Sturgis the 3rd of Boston, America.
