A rare Danish silver spring detent deck chronometer pocket watch, circa 1800. A polished engine turned case. White enamel dial, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds and blued steel spade hands. Hinged, frosted gilt brass full plate movement, cylindrical pillars, spring detent escapement with detent set in a slot cut in the back plate, cut bimetallic compensation balance with outer temperature screws and inner mean time nuts, blued steel free-sprung helical balance spring with outer terminal curves, English cock with diamond endstone, the unlocking roller set above the impulse roller. Signed on movement.

Jules Frédéric Urban Jürgensen, 1837-1894, was the oldest son of Jules (Frédéric) Jürgensen, who trained in watchmaking together with his younger brother Jacques Alfred Jürgensen (1842-1912). The brothers continued their father’s business trading under the name Jules Jürgensen, as both of them were exceptionally skilled watchmakers. Jules Frédéric Urban was based in Le Locle, he was politically active and held several public offices. He also owned a sizable farm. On March 17th, 1884, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honour.
