Half hunter case pocket watch with lever escapement

A heavy English half hunter cased pocket watch with power reserve display, made by the royal watchmaker Thomas Russel & Son on 18 Church Street in Liverpool, England, circa 1901. The plain and numbered case of this watch was crafted from 18 carat gold and has hallmarks from 1901. The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, a restored power reserve display and original blued steel hands. The fine quality movement has an English lever escapement and screwed chatons.
Case and movement have matching numbers and dial and movement are signed.

Thomas Russel & Son
The company Thos. Russell & Son Thomas Russell junior (1811-1867) was founded in 1848. The company was first established at 20/22 Slater Street, Liverpool. The company’s headquarters were later moved to 30/32 Slater Street. In 1859 Thomas Robert Russell (1833-1894) and Alfred Holgate Russell ( 1840-1893) took over the business. The firm was renamed, Thomas Russell & Son. The partnership between Thomas Robert and Alfred ended in 1870. Thomas Robert became the owner of the Russell Watch and Chronometer Manufactureat Cathedral Works, 18 Church Street, with addresses in Piccadilly, Toronto and Canada. In 1894 it became Russell’s Limited and continued as a retail jeweller with offices in Liverpool, Manchester, and Llandudno until the early 20th century. The company Thos. Alfred Holgate Russell continued Russell & Son as Alfred Russell & Co.
