An exquisite English quarter repeating gold enamel verge pocket watch in a triple case for the Ottoman market, circa 1812.
Three 18 carat gold cases:
Outer case – floral engravings, opaque pink enamel with opaque white and translucid red “taille d’épargne” flowers, the waved inner rim with opaque white and translucid red enamelling, “à goutte”, large outer hinge;
Second case – the edge with floral engravings, opaque blue enamelling with gold foliage and translucid red “taille d’épargne” flowers. Back with hexagonal enamel medallion: polychrome painting of a Turkish coastal landscape with sailing ships and a town fortification at sunrise on an engine turned translucid pink background, à goutte, case maker punch mark “IM”;
Inner case – turquoise enamelled zigzag bordering on the front side, the back side with open-worked décor near the rim, flower and foliage decoration, oval flower medallions on a blue background. Back with central medallion: a very fine polychrome opaque miniature painting, bouquet of summer flowers on a translucid pink engine turned background, translucid red enamel bordering, enamelled pendant and neck, pusher for repetition set with a large sapphire, rear bell.
Enamel dial with radial Ottoman numerals and “Fleur de Lys” gold hands. Fire gilt full plate movement with keywind, applied florally engraved ornaments, 2 hammers, verge escapement, three-arm steel balance, finely florally engraved balance cock and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

George Prior Son of John Prior of Nessfield, also a clock-maker, was a leading London maker of watches for the Turkish and Islamic markets, in association with Edward Prior, who was perhaps his brother. One two occasions he received an award from the Society of Arts for his productions.
