Open faced verge pocket watch by James Shrapnel

A very fine, English half-pearl-set gold enamel verge pocket watch with corresponding gold enamel chatelaine, circa 1780. 18K gold case with the back cover lavishly engine turned and with translucent mauve-coloured enamelling. Central large half pearl with applied diamond-set gold fillets framed by a white enamel border. Back and front outer borders are set with half-pearls. Corresponding chatelaine with half pearl-set gold enamel medallions and numerous pearl chain links. Gold engine turned dial with inlaid radial Roman numerals and blued Breguet hands. Fine full plate movement, keywind, applied floral decorations, fire gilt, signed, chain/fusee, solid movement pillars, verge escapement, three-arm steel balance, very finely florally engraved, pierced balance cock.
