Gentleman’s gold open faced watch
–
A fine and heavy English gentleman’s minute repeating pocket watch with 24h power reserve indicator, circa 1901. This pocket watch features an 18k gold case that is tiered, polished, and engraved with a noble family crest. The gold dome is adorned with a dedication engraving, and the case maker’s punch mark RN indicates that it was made by Robert Benson North, the proprietor of North & Sons from 1917-1933, successors to Nicole, Nielsen & Company. The watch includes a slide for the repeating mechanism. The enamel dial displays radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, and a 24-hour power reserve indicator, with blued spade hands to complete the elegant look. The watch’s movement is a 3/4 plate design, optionally key or crown winding, frosted, gilt, and signed. It includes screwed chatons, an English lever escapement, a chain/fusee mechanism, a gold screw compensation balance, a free-sprung balance spring, and a chatoned diamond endstone.
