Gold, diamond, garnet, and tourmaline-set watch by D. Hubert
–
An English gold, diamond, garnet, and tourmaline-set lady’s single-cased pendant watch with short chatelaine and two seals, circa 1760. It has a gilt brass full plate movement with verge escapement, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance cock, a diamond endstone, a cock engraved with foliage, a mask at the neck, a silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, and turned baluster pillars. It is signed and numbered D. Hubert, London, 1846. The dial is white enamel with Roman numerals, an Arabic outer minute ring, and a blued steel beetle and poker hands; the minute hand is kinked to accommodate the winding square. Dial signed Hubert, London.
–
The case features a back set with a single red garnet with gold mounts, a front bezel set with diamonds and tourmalines, and a diamond-set pendant. The chatelaine has a pendant hook mounted with a faceted garnet bordered by a row of diamonds, a central diamond-set pendant chain flanked by gold chains and two pendant chains each terminating in an urn with a carnelian seal, and the pendant hook is stamped GAPE within a quatrefoil cartouche.

The movement is functioning properly. The dial is in good overall condition, with some minor chipping around the winding hole and in the centre. The case back has scratches and small chips. One diamond below 6 o’clock on the bezel has been replaced. The garnet at the top of the pendant hook on the chatelaine has scratches and a small chip on the left side. The left-hand pendant chain features an urn with a hinged back, which was presumably used as a locket for a keepsake. One of the urns suspended from the pendant chains is set with what appears to be a faceted rock crystal.

Signed: D. Hubert, London
