Important Blois type verge watch

An important large and extremely rare turquoise enamel Blois type verge watch, made by Henricus Jones in London, England, circa 1680. The full hunter case of the watch is made of turquoise enamel, decorated with many flowers, in a very rare case shape with a cover, inside the case and cover enamel painting of very rare quality. The silver florally engraved dial with iron hands has a flower symbol in the middle. The movement has a verge escapement with vase pillars, a typical balance cock with the flower in the centre which is also found in other works by Henricus Jones.
The movement plate is signed.

This type of lidded enamel watch with turquoise enamel is extremely rare, fewer than ten specimens are known. The most famous of these is the “Cremsdorff”, auctioned at Sotheby’s 2019.

Henry Jones, an English watchmaker, was based in Temple, London. He completed his apprenticeship in watchmaking in 1654 and became a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1663. In 1691, he became the master of the same company. Henry Jones passed away in 1695.
