Open faced watch with chatelaine by John Pyke

A very fine English repousée pair cased quarter repeating verge pocket watch, circa 1750. Depicting a Christian subject The adoration of the three Magi – with corresponding repousée chatelaine with two vinaigrettes. 22 Carat gold case, the back side with repousée decor, depicting the adoration of the three Magi, large lateral hinge; gold, very finely engraved, inner case with pierced foliate decor, rear bell and silver movement protection cap. Case maker Del Grange. fec (Peter de la Grange). White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals and gold arrow shaped hands. Full plate movement, key wind, fire gilt, applied, florally engraved and pierced silver ornaments, chain/fusee, one hammer, circular movement pillars, three arm steel balance, very finely engraved pierced silver balance cock with angel face and a large diamond end stone on balance.

John Pyke was born around 1700 and worked as a watchmaker in London around 1755 in Newgate Street and Grays Inn. He was named watchmaker to the Prince of Wales. In addition to small clocks, he also supplied table clocks and floor clocks. John Pyke was the father of George Pyke (1723-1777). John Pyke was Samuel Green’s teacher. Pyke was known for his clocks with musical movements, especially flute clocks, he completed the flute clock by watchmaker Charles Clay. Clay, John and George Pyke often used music by Georg Friedrich Händel. John Pyke died in 1762, his will is dated May 13th. This beautiful gold watch with Chatelaine, Moss agate and diamonds, signed John Pyke No. 959, from Pyke is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
